In today's economy, many people are looking for ways to make extra money from home. Home businesses are especially popular for stay-at-home moms.

If you're looking for a quick easy way to make money from home without effort, you may get scammed. Many home business scams take your money but don't deliver on their promises.

Not all home business opportunities are scams but you have to learn how to separate the legitimate opportunities from the scams. So how do recognize a scam? How can you prevent yourself from getting scammed? How do you know if a home business opportunity is legitimate?

You must recognize the typical warning signs:

Avoid promotions, web sites, programs and home business opportunities promising quick money, easy money and big bucks in a short of time for little effort and easy work you don't need any experience or skills for.

Building a business - even a home business requires work and takes time, commitment, persistence and skills.

Also avoid companies promising that they'll do all the work for you. Why would they need you? Why would they pay you anything if they do all the work?

Do your home work before buying a program or business opportunity. Research the business or work at home opportunity. Talk to others that have done the kind of work or are operating the kind of business you're interested in. Or read more about the home business online. Check out work at home forums.

Avoid home businesses that:

* Are expensive to start. Choose a business that is inexpensive to start.

* Require you to work you are not familiar with. You will be more likely to succeed if you're running a business around work that you have experience in.

* Require you to purchase large amounts of product every month (some MLM companies).

* Require you to stock products. Many companies have online ordering or phone ordering for your customers and will ship products directly to your customers (some MLM companies).

* Provide low quality or outdated merchandise or poor quality equipment (some vending businesses).

Here are some questions you can ask to evaluate a business opportunity:

* What skills do I need?

* What equipment do I need?

* How much money do I need to get started?

* What kind of work will I do?

* How much money can I make?

* How often will I get paid? (affiliate programs)

* Are there minimum requirements to get paid?

* Are there quality requirements to get paid?

There are many legitimate home businesses. Learn how to avoid the scams and you'll recognize a legitimate business when you see one.
